Have a read of the following links to articles in the Daily Express and Daily Mirror about a keyhole heart tumour resection  that I performed a few weeks back.  Amy is a senior echocardiographer and scanned her own heart while at work and found a 2cm benign tumour in her left atrium, called a myxoma – two and a half weeks before she was due to get married! These tumours are very rare (incidence of <0.1% of the population) and can cause a stroke if they dislodge and travel to the brain (this is called ’embolization’) or can obstruct the flow of blood through the heart.  The tumour had to be removed as soon as possible to prevent this but this had to be done in such a way that there would be no visible scarring when she was in her wedding dress two weeks later and she had to be fit enough to dance on her wedding night.  So we performed a keyhole procedure on her, she went home 4 days later and looked great on her wedding day. This has only been done in the UK  like this a handful of times and is a real testament to the speed of recovery after less invasive heart surgery. Congratulations to both Amy and Simon.
